Laser systems

Introduction
We carry two primary laser products - the NEW Respond Impulse Laser and the Respond 2400XL Laser System. Our lasers are made to work in difficult conditions, like barns and veterinary clinics. It is not unusual for the lasers to be placed in the back of a truck or in a tack trunk where it suffers some bumping and tossing around. The systems are robust; components are chosen that will provide many years of service to our customers. We will provide references from veterinarians and Olympic competitors who have been our customers for over 18 years. Check out our web pages with endorsements and testimonials to see what our customers say.

Why we use lasers, not LEDs.
Respond Systems, Inc continues to manufacture our systems using only LASER diodes; we do not make systems using LEDs (light emitting diodes) because there are not enough studies that demonstrate that you can achieve the same results with LEDs. Evidence at this time favors using laser. At such time as there is conclusive evidence that specific LEDs produce reliable, reproducible results, the same as laser, we will add LEDs to our product line. In the meantime, we will continue to use 904nm lasers, which have proven in studies using our laser to improve the speed and strenght of healing in soft tissue injury. (Enwemeka, C, Gallium Arsenide Laser Photostimulation Augments the Strength of Healing Rabbit Calcaneal Tendons, American Society of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery, April 29, 2001.)

FDA specifies labeling for laser systems to aid the consumer in making wise choices. The label must specify the laser class, the Maximum Average Power, and the wavelength. The Maximum Average Power reading shown on this label is the amount of laser light that can be measured when the device is 20cm away, and throug a 7mm aperture stop. This is the measurement specified by the FDA to show on this label so that any potential eye hazard can be determined. The output at 20cm from the laser output demonstrates that this laser is a non-significant hazard.

Placement of danger logo is a requirement of U.S. federal law if you are advertising a laser therapy system. If this logo does not appear with the advertisement for a product, then it is either not a laser system, or it is not complying with federal law.

Laser Classifications-How much power is enough? Can there be too much?
After you are convinced that the system you are using is a laser, and NOT an LED, then consider how it is classified. Lasers are classified based upon power. Think of laser power as you think of roller skates, scooters, cars and jet planes. The graph shows the number of seconds required to deliver 12J, 20 Joules and 30 Joules. A 500mW laser like the 2400XL’s emits 100 times faster than a 5mW and 10 times faster than a 50mW laser. More power gets you there (or in the case of laser, delivers a therapeutic treatment dosage) faster. Usually, the more power you get, the faster you get there, and the more expensive it is. As with personal transportation, there is a practical limit to going faster. Class I lasers at 5mW can be used to stimulate tissue, however, the long period of time needed to generate an average dosage of 4 Joules/cm2, 800 seconds, is prohibitive. Class IIIb lasers are usually 500mW or less, and are designated by the U.S. FDA as non-significant risk devices. Professional laser therapy devices fall within the IIIb category. A 50mW therapy laser can generate 4 joules in 80 seconds, while a 500mW laser will generate 4 Joules in 8 seconds. For laser therapy, they go “fast enough.” You can also go “too fast,” with Class IV lasers. They produce powers above 500mW, and at 7000mW (or 7 Watts) go so fast that FDA requires a warning label that states the laser device has the potential to ignite materials on contact, causing injury. In addition, the FDA web site states, “WARNING: Direct eye contact with output beam from the laser will cause serious damage and possible blindness….Avoid direct exposure to the laser light. The intensity of the beam can easily cause flesh burns or ignite clothing” (Click here for more information). Respond Lasers are designed to provide the owner with a safe device (Class IIIb lasers are considered non-significant risk devices), that do not heat the tissue, and yet provide enough energy to permit a rapid treatment.

Why 904nm Wavelength?
We have chosen 904nm as the wavelength for our veterinary products due to the enhanced penetration characteristics at the higher wavelengths. This permits more laser energy to penetrate deep into joints and muscles. This graph demonstrates relative penetration at 904 compared to lower wavelengths where more energy is absorbed at the surface of the tissue. It shows that 904nm has roughly 4 times the penetration capability when compared to wavelengths at 620 or 630nm. Penetration peaks at about 904nm which is why we have chosen this wavelength.

How long will my laser last?
Respond Systems, Inc. is a privately owned Connecticut, USA corporation that has been manufacturing Class IIIb therapeutic laser systems and pulsing electromagnetic field therapy systems since 1986. We are registered with U.S. FDA as a laser manufacturer. Our own team of software and hardware engineers design our systems in close consultation with veterinarians and our clients. We also service the equipment we make. The life span of our lasers in service averages about ten to twelve years. System improvements over time have included additional operating features such as pulsing frequencies, improved battery life, enhanced digital design and increased power. These features have been introduced as technology changed.

Service
We know our customers depend upon their Respond Systems equipment. Many problems can be analyzed by our trained technicians right over the telephone, and replacement parts can be quickly shipped out. If in person inspection is needed, our service department maintains a trained staff and parts inventory permitting a strict 2 business day turn around for an analysis of problems. We contact you with a trouble diagnosis and secure your approval for any work which needs to be done. 99% of service is completed and shipped back to our customers within 3 business days of the time it came in the door. Customers subscribing to our Loaner Service Option have loaner systems shipped to them while their unit is in for repair for a modest fee. Our email shipment notification service notifies you by email that your system has been shipped to you, and gives you the tracking number which allows real time package tracking while in transit.
